LEADING THE CENTRAL CYCLING COMMUNITY
“Our goal is to inspire a passion for cycling in the communities where we live and ride.”
Hutch’s Bicycles has a long history in Oregon and the cycling community. The company started in Eugene in 1927 by Earl “Hutch” Hutchinson selling bicycles, lawnmowers and also key-making services. In the 1960’s Earl’s son, Bill took over the business transitioning it into a full-time bicycle store.
In 1970 Bill hired Jim Lewis, an amateur racer and cycling enthusiast who was a regular visitor to the bike shop. At age 14, Jim started building bikes for the store. During this time, Bill mentored Jim on business and racing. Throughout the late 70’s and early 80’s Jim excelled not only in his job but also in racing. He was an amazing road racer, criterium racer, and hill climber.
Under Bill’s ownership, Hutch’s Bicycles expanded to Springfield, Oregon and in 1981 opened Hutch’s Bicycles in Bend, Oregon. Jim became the Store Manager of the iconic 3rd Street Bend location. Jim continued to be active in the local cycling clubs in Bend and helped expand the cycling community in town. In the late 80’s Jim and his wife Susan were offered, and accepted, the opportunity to purchase the Bend location from the Hutchinson family.
With the introduction of mountain bikes and the development of the Bend Trail System, cycling became more popular than ever. Seeing the growth, Jim opened a second location of Hutch’s Bicycle’s on the popular and growing West side of Bend.
Continuing to see the growth and interest in cycling, Jim expanded the Hutch’s business, opening a multi-sport automotive rack system store in Bend creatively named Rack-N-Roll. And later, Jim opened a 3rd bike shop in Redmond, Oregon.
Hutch’s continues to be a full-service family owned business providing bikes, bike services and automotive rack systems for Central Oregon. Hutch’s employs 20 full-time employees and up to 50 employees in the summer season.
